Tutorial 8 Ethics and safety

Purpose and aims

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is now widely used for neuroscientific research. Although MRI is considered a non-invasive and safe method, it is of great importance to protect subjects against potential hazards and ethical issues related to participating in research. The resources that are listed on this web-page provide an up to date view on how to minimize risks and raise awareness to ethical issues.

The Reference Manual for Magnetic Resonance Safety, Implants and Devices: 2009 Edition (650 pages) is an indispensable textbook for radiologists, MRI technologists, and facility managers. This internationally acclaimed series includes fully updated guidelines and recommendations from the latest information in the peer-reviewed literature as well as documents developed by various professional and governmental organizations (ACR, FDA, NEMA, MDA, IEC and the Institute for Magnetic Resonance, Safety, Education and Research). Features of the 2009 Edition include patient screening forms in English and Spanish and guidelines for scanning patients with electronically-activated devices. -Section I presents fully updated safety guidelines and recommendations. -Section II has the latest information for implants, devices, and materials tested for the MRI environment. -Updated information pertaining to MRI Contrast Agents and Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF) is included along with websites to monitor emerging findings. -An Appendix provides website information for more than 150 biomedical companies to facilitate finding the latest company information for implants and devices. The List now has information for more than 2,200 objects with over 900 implants tested at 3-Tesla.

IMRSER

The Institute for Magnetic Resonance Safety, Education, and Research (IMRSER) was formed in response to the growing need for information and research on matters pertaining to magnetic resonance (MR) safety. The IMRSER is the first independent, multidisciplinary, professional organization devoted to promoting awareness, understanding, and communication of MR safety issues through education and research.

Magnetic Resonance Procedures: Health Effects and Safety is the first authoritative text on MR procedures and its associated health and safety concerns written by noted radiologists, physicists, and scientists with expertise in the field. It contains both theoretical and practical information. This timely text discusses emergent issues related to MR imaging and concerns such as shielding, the safe use of contrast agents, and management of patients with claustrophobia, anxiety, and emotional stress. It also contains a sample pre-MR screening form; comprehensive safety information for over 700 implants, devices, and materials; a list of medical devices and products for interventional MR procedures; and a summary of peer-reviewed MR safety studies. In the wake of recent government demands for increased patient safety in hospitals, along with the rapidly expanding use of MRI, this book is particularly important. It is the definitive resource for information on the safety aspects of magnetic resonance procedures.
